[edit] easypeasy 1.5

  1. De-install pulseaudio (basically everything with "pulse" in its name via synaptics)
  2. Install gnome-alsamixer
  3. Set via sound preferences everything to alsa playback device
  4. Go into Skype and set all audio devices to "default"
  5. Double check that your volume settings are OK via gnome alsamixer (imic, emic-boost,imic-boost all to zero, everything else pretty high -this is a matter of taste/age).

[edit] How do I enable the microphone?

The mic isn't enabled by default in Ubuntu Eee. You will have to make a few changes to allow Ubuntu Eee to capture your voice.

[edit] 701 series machines (and maybe others)

For the eeepc 701 series add the following information to a file named snd-hda-intel in the /etc/modprobe.d folder:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

If you don't have the file snd-hda-intel, you'll need to create it with a text editor, like gedit. You will need Administrative access in order to write to the /etc/modprobe.d folder. sudo works for this purpose. The options will activate more preferences for the sound device on the 701 series machines, and allow for the proper, useful configuration of Skype & friends.

[edit] Enable in Gnome

  1. Double click the speaker icon in the top right corner
  2. Go to Edit > Preferences
  3. Check "Capture" at the near bottom and click Close (If you do not see this option, try restarting the computer.)
  4. Go to Recording and enable it at the bottom by clicking the mic

[edit] And enable in Skype

  1. When logged in (to Skype), click the little Skype logo in the bottom left corner and select Options
  2. Go to Sound Devices and select "HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0)" (the second one) from "Sound In"
  3. Click Apply and Close

[edit] No compiz or no video

Compiz (the fancy 3D effects) isn't working with Skype Video as of yet. Disable Compiz by going to "System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects". Click none
