Ubuntu Eee 8.04 running the Netbook Remix interface

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is a 'remix' of the standard Ubuntu Eee Desktop 8.04 release to enable it to work better on devices with small screens, such as Asus Eee. Please note that the Netbook Remix interface is experimental and not stable software. It should only be used for testing purposes.

[edit] Installation (Ubuntu Eee 8.04)

  • Add the source 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main' and install packages go-home-applet window-picker-applet maximus human-netbook-theme and ume-launcher. You can download a script to do this by entering the following in a terminal:
wget http://netbook-install-script.googlecode.com/files/netbook-install.sh
chmod +x netbook-install.sh
sudo ./netbook-install.sh

[edit] Configuration

  • Delete bottom panel
  • Setup top panel with the following: GoHomeApplet|WindowPickerApplet|NotificationArea|MixerApplet|Clock
  • Select the "Human Netbook Theme" in System → Preferences → Appearance
  • Add "maximus" to System → Preferences → Sessions
  • Make sure Compiz is disabled: System → Preferences → Appearance → Visual Effects - none

Log out and back in and you're using the Netbook Remix interface!

  • Note: If you like using your entire screen, apply autohide and move that top panel to the bottom of your screen - the skin doesn't look perfect but the space helps.
