[edit] Top Bar

The top bar is always visible even after an application launch. It consists of

  • The Easy Peasy logo to the far left. This takes you back to the Desktop launcher. It does not close the application you currently have open, so it's perfectly safe to use it whenever you want to launch something.
  • The window picker just right of the Easy Peasy logo. This is where all your open files and applications are shown. Click one to reactivate it. On this screenshot, you see that Firefox and Totem Movie Player are running.
  • What's currently open is in the center of the screen. It displays the name of the active application, and a close button at the right. It does NOT display a minimize or un-maximize buttons; most application windows take the full screen, and are either showing or not.
  • The task bar by the close button. Here you'll find any running applets. Applets are small applications which help you in some way. On this screenshot you see the Update manager informing the user about new upgrades, network manager displaying its signal strength, the volume (muted) and the date.
  • Caps lock applet at the far right. As the Asus Eee doesn't have a light which lights up when Caps lock is active, this A will light up to show you that caps lock is activated.

[edit] Desktop Launcher

This is what meets you the first time you start your freshly installed Easy Peasy. You won't see any applications there yet; that's because you're viewing the Favorites category, and you haven't configured any yet. On this screenshot, however, 6 favorites have been configured; the 3 flagged with a gold star have been added since the last login. On the left hand side you'll see all the Application Categories (ex: Graphics, Internet, Office, ...). Click a category and the category applications will show up; click an application to launch it. On the right hand side you see all the "Places" you can go (ex: your Home directory ("My Documents"), Network shares, ...). If you connect a usb stick or external harddrive, they'll also show up on the right hand side. Click one to open it.

Note that you can't change launcher item attributes (such as icons, sort order, command, etc.) directly in Desktop Launcher; go through Preferences | Main Menu to make those changes.

[edit] Running Windows applications and how to find open source alternatives

  • Before you rush to install Windows applications on Easy Peasy, you should know that there are many many free and open source alternatives to your old Windows or Mac applications. Open Source as Alternative www.osalt.com is a great location to find these.
  • Firefox is a fantastic web browser, Thunderbird is a great mail client and Open Office is a full suite of office programs, compatible with Office 2007. Evolution is a complete email and calendar package much like Outlook, which will even link up to an Exchange server if you need it to. All this is pre-installed in Easy Peasy, so you're ready to go right now!
  • If you want to learn how to install extra software, check out the official Ubuntu wiki.
  • If you're really really stuck though, you can run many Windows applications by installing Wine. Please see this How to
